Welcome to WALES

Information about WALES It is said that the European Celts, who arrived just after 600 BC, brought the popular Welsh attributes of eloquence, warmth and imagination. Although Cardiff boasts most of Wales' national institutions, including the National Museum, the appeal of a visit lies outside the towns where the country's development is framed in wonderful scenery. The backbone of the Cambrian Mountains terminates in the soaring peaks of Snowdonia National Park and the angular ridges of the Brecon Beacons; both are superb walking country, as is the Pembrokeshire Coast in the southwest Needless to say, you can partake in all manner of outdoor pursuits here and facilities are modern and plentiful. The one thing that marks Wales out so distinctly from the rest of Britain is the survival of Welsh as a living language. Welsh is an Indo-European language, from a Celtic offshoot with a Latin influence. The language was fully developed by the 6th century, and is one of the oldest in Europe. Border town Hay-on-Wye has sloping lanes, Norman and Jacobean ruins, a market-town buzz and the world's largest collection of second-hand bookstores as well as a literary festival of growing renown. The eisteddfod is a thoroughly Welsh institution that tends to leave the non-Welsh mystified. The word means a gathering of bards and an number are held throughout the year and all are welcome. In many ways, Wales is just what you picture it to be: rolling moorlands, glaciated mountain areas, male-voice choirs, tongue-twisting place names, Rugby Union, romantic castles and old mining towns. However, with its new assembly and devolved power, it is buzzing with eager expectation. it is a place where history is living and traditions, including the Welsh language, are fighting for their future and its strange mix of diehard tradition and New World sophistication is one of Wales' greatest assets.
